Simar Kaus

Justice Advisor

she/her

Simar has been determined to work in civil rights her whole life, specifically through reforming the legal system. Her love for this work began after reading “I Dream of Peace: Images of War by children of former Yugoslavia” in elementary school. Seeing herself in the stick figures of other children, she developed an interest in ending international conflicts and supporting marginalized peoples. This fall she will be entering —- as a political and data science major with a pre-law track.

Today, she focuses on challenging systems of oppression, specifically as they relate to the criminal justice system. Using her experience as an environmental policy writer at the Greater Good initiative, she hopes to write a policy to prevent suicides among incarcerated youth, an issue very dear to her heart. She has also worked to promote Sikh awareness with the Sikh American Legal Defense Foundation. She continues her work to promote diversity as a co-founder of the Hearstory Project: a non-profit for increased Asian American representation through oral history, the arts, and political awareness.

In addition to her love of advocacy, Simar is passionate about self-expression in the arts. She loves art history and is an avid spoken word poetry enthusiast. She also runs her own makeup artistry business and is interested in the science behind cosmetics.
